Utility to Estimate Model Domain Volume at Each Timestep

Can someone give me a hint about how to go about writing a Python or Matlab utility to extract parameters values for any set of cells for any set of time-steps in a set of EFDC output files? Specifically, I am needing to estimate the volume of water in the model domain at all time-steps (time series of volume) to compare with observed volumes. I would also like to calculate time statistics for dye ‘exposure’ for an aggregate of cells. The available utility is difficult to decipher, and from my interpretation of the instructions, cannot accomplish what I am attempting to do.
