Simulation of algae

Dear professor,
Among the 22 EFDC model water quality state variables, (1)cyanobacteria,(2)diatom algae,(3)green algae. The input data of them should be the algal biomass of algal group x? or the Chla concentration of algal group x? What’s the units of time series data? Thank you very much!

EFDC model is a carbon based model. The input data for cyanobacteria, diatom alage, and green algae should be in carbon units. The units of the time series data would be 

gram of Carbon / m3 or mg of C/l (mg/l)
