Once an EFDC model has been setup and calibrated for sediment transport it is not difficult to model the scenario you describe. If you are mainly concerned about large scale effects it will work fine. However, a nearfield analysis could be more difficult. This is because right at the gates you will need a lot of cells and this lay lead to instability in the model due to the velocities. The scale you require will determine the success of your approach.
